A Successful Season comes to an end!

AND THAT IS WHY I SUCCEED!

i-6d5mbgr-x2.jpgAs a former player, I have marvelled at the passion our Varsity Girls have brought to Volleyball at Westgate this Season. As a former coach, I was awestruck by their leadership on (and off) the court. As a parent, I was deeply proud at their collective determination to perform to their limit. As a fan, I was highly entertained by the quality of the competition they blessed us with. As a player, coach, parent and fan, I speak for the whole Westgate Community in extending our Girls a huge CONGRATULATIONS on a phenomenal Season. All of this would have been impossible without the selfless commitment of Coaches Vaughn and Dara.

Success is often measured by winning. To be sure, the Girls had lots of that; a perfect 14–0 season record; Champions in 2 Tournaments; AAAA Tournament Finalists; and SCAC Zone Finalists. Indeed, the Team  went undefeated (not losing even 1 set) in the Provincials Championships -- only to succumb to their arch-rivals in the 3d set of the Provincial Final. As I stood there nervously watching the start of the 3d set of this Match, I was struck by the ageless adage ‘it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game’.  A calm came over me. I felt assured at that moment that no matter the result, these Girls had succeeded. They had captured the attention of the audience, respect of their peers, pride of their coaches (and families),i-57lcrvg-x2.jpg spirit of the game, and ultimately a coveted Silver Medal.

I say to all the Girls on the Team, soon you will fully appreciate the magnitude of your accomplishments this Season. Although the final loss was hard (especially for the Seniors), it holds as much meaning as any win. Reflect upon this Season in the future. Remind yourself of all your accomplishments through loss and adversity. The meaning of success is not measured by always winning. The measure of success has been best expressed in the words of one Michael Jordan (…and who is he to know?!?):

I’ve missed more than  9000 shots in my career.

I’ve lost almost 300 games.

26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed.

I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed!

GO WINGS, GO!!!

Athlete of the Week

Ben Ryan of the Westgate Wings cross-country team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.

This 5’8” runner led the Westgate Varsity Boys to their 2nd straight Cross Country Championship, while also winning the individual gold for his category.  Coach Doug Durksen states, “Ben is a team leader and has helped encourage all of our other athletes.  He has helped run practices and helped to organize and run a weekend training camp.  He is a role model for our junior high runners and he takes this seriously.  Ben is willing to offer guidance based on his triathlon background which has helped team members immensely.”

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 85%, while also competing in track & field.

The Westgate Volleyball season is in full swing.  The Varsity program is experiencing much success and the JV Girls and Boys are making quite a statement in their league and tournament play.  We wish all athletes much success as the divisional play offs and provincials draw near.  If you haven't made it out to cheer on our athletes, check out the schedule on this website.  Your evening in the stands will definitely be entertaining.
