Fermat Grade 11 Math Contest
Wednesday, February 18 2009

60 minutes

ABOUT THE CONTESTS

The contests fall into two broad categories. Some are grade specific, and others are open to students at any level. The series of four CNML and four Senior Division ASMA contests are not grade specific. The series of four APML and four Junior-Intermediate Division ASMA contests are for grades 7, 8, and S1 students only. These four series are short contests, which will be scheduled during lunch hours. The grade specific contests vary in length from 30 minutes to 150 minutes. These contests will usually be written in the morning, and will require that contestants miss some classes. Students who place on the honour role in some of these contests are eligible to participate in the next invitational level of contests or examinations. The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo (CMC) introduced three new contests in 2003. These contests, Fryer, Galois, and Hypatia, target the top 25% of all Canadian students. Each paper will have four problems requiring a full written solution, a game strategy question, and a scientific calculator question.

WHAT ABOUT CALCULATORS?

The CNML,*CMC, ASMA, and AMC contests permit any calculator accepted for SAT’s (calculators without a QWERTY keyboard).

The APML and MB MATH (S4) contests DO NOT permit calculators.

ACRONYMN LEGEND:

Thank you for your interest, participation, and co-operation. Mathematics contests offer an excellent, non-threatening opportunity to test problem-solving skills. A secondary benefit is that these contests offer students an insight into how competitive they are with the best of their peers across Manitoba, Canada, and the United States.
