Helen began her teaching career in Winkler Manitoba, teaching several elementary and middle grade levels. In 1988 she accepted her first teaching position at Westgate teaching Religion, German and Language Arts. In 1991 Helen became Westgate's guidance counsellor and resource teacher. After her maternity (2001-2003) she worked part-time in resource. In 2010, Bob Hummelt convinced her to work full-time again by enticing her with an opportunity to teach grade 7 Math. She is guided by the philosophy that all students have the ability to learn and develop their academic, social, emotional and spiritual skills, given the right circumstance and support. Helen enjoys gardening, photography, and spending time with her family and friends. She and her husband Chris are members of First Mennonite Church. Helen obtained a Bachelor of Theology in 1981 from Canadian Mennonite Bible College (now CMU). She went on to the University of Manitoba and obtained a Bachelor of Education in 1984 (gold medalist), and Bachelor of Arts in 1987, and a Post Baccalaureate degree in Counseling in 1991.
