Born and raised in Winnipeg, Terry Dirks is a graduate of University of Winnipeg, Bachelor of Arts, and University of Manitoba, Education Degree. She has also completed English literature and fine arts courses at University of Manitoba to augment her teaching assignments. Terry began her teaching career in 1971 in Steinbach Manitoba, teaching junior high language arts at Steinbach Junior High. In a widely diverse career, Terry has taught grades 1-4, 6-10, and grade 12, focusing for the most part in Language Arts teaching, her favourite subject area. After 10 years in the public sector, both in Steinbach, Niverville, and Winnipeg, Terry began teaching at Westgate in 1998. At Westgate, Terry was immediately caught up in the excitement of the Marsh and Mountain program and has been a participant in all three yearly trips with students for many years. Terry credits the Marsh and Mountain Club for introducing her to outdoor camping and canoeing, and developing her skills to participate fully in these life-long pleasures. Although very interested in personal physical fitness, Terry never pictured herself as a coach, but Westgate also provided this opportunity and Terry became part of the cross- country coaching team for many years. Terry and her husband Chris are members of First Mennonite Church Winnipeg. They have three daughters and three grandchildren.
